Keeping a Marriage Journal: 7 Ideas to Get You Started
Keeping a marriage journal is a powerful way to improve your marriage and become a better spouse. It will help you get to know yourself and your husband better. What you put in your journal is limited only by your imagination. If you are not sure how to get started, here are some suggestions of things you could write about:
1. Your goals as a wife and how you plan to accomplish them. Set long-term and short term goals. Put down in detail how you will reach your goals.
2. The vision you have for your marriage. Where would you like to see your marriage in a year from now? How about in 5 years? Would you like to be able to go on a date every Friday night or take exotic vacations with your husband twice a year? How about new wardrobe so you’ll feel and look more attractive?
3. Your accomplishments and victories. What successes have you experienced in your marriage- have you learned how to disagree with your husband without starting an argument or maybe you and your husband broke out of your usual lovemaking routine and successfully did something totally different. Write about your experiences in your journal. This will encourage you to keep working on your yourself and your marriage.
4. Things you appreciate about your spouse- thoughtful things he does for you, or any masculine traits you especially enjoy. Reading through this list will cultivate gratitude for your man and it’ll be easier for you to verbally express your appreciation.
5. Information you receive. As you read marriage books, attend relationship conferences or listen to CD’s you will learn things that can help you succeed in your role as a wife but the fact is that we only hold on to very little information the first time we hear it or read it. Writing it down and reading through it regularly will insure that you can retain and use this beneficial information.
6. Prayers that were answered concerning your marriage. Writing down the things that God has done for you will remind you of His faithfulness.
7. Your husband’s preferences. What gifts did he particularly seem to enjoy? What type of outfits does he like to see you wear? What makes him feel special? What are his favorite foods? What types of movies does he prefer? This information will be particularly helpful when you are trying to decide what he would enjoy for his birthday or what type of gift to get him for Valentine’s day or how to celebrate father’s day.
Use your journal to help you improve your marriage as you discover your weaknesses and strengths and develop into the woman God wants you to be.
In order for you to really benefit from your journal, you must able to write your private thoughts without worrying about prying eyes. Consider using code talk when you’re writing about sensitive issues, just in case, your journal accidentally falls into the wrong hands (your children, the babysitter, a nosy relative etc.)
