How to be Led by the Spirit of God Worksheet

But just because I want to be led by the Holy Spirit, doesn’t mean it will automatically happen.

The way I get it to happen is by meditating in the word of God.  God’s word has the power within it to bring itself to pass. I start out by repeating over and over again, “I am led by the Holy Spirit. He leads me and guides me into all the truth,” (John 16:13). I also make it personal by saying things like, “He helps me make wise decisions so that I always say and do the right thing at the right time in the right way.

If I am having a particular problem, I say something like, “Because I am led by the Holy Spirit I know how to motivate my son to do his homework” (or respond to my friend when she asks to borrow money again).

Seeking to be led by the Spirit of God is one of the best things we can do to live a successful life. As you meditate on Romans 8:14,  you’ll find that certain things just seem like the right thing to do.  You will know what to do in situations that used to perplex you.  You will say things that bring peace and harmony to situations.  You will know what opportunities to pursue and which ones to let go.

In the Strong’s concordance, some of the meanings for Hebrew word for meditate are: to murmur, to ponder, to imagine, to mutter, to study, to talk and to utter. Here is an example in my own life of what happened when I meditated on the word as opposed to what happened when I didn’t.

My daughter had been sick for over a week with a fever and bad spells of coughing.  I was being lazy and did not really pray for her, thinking that any day now she would be better.  When she was finally getting over it, my 5 year old son started getting sick.  He had a very high fever and my first thought was, “Oh no, another week of sickness.”  Then I felt convicted because I knew I should be believing God for his healing instead of just accepting this sickness.

After the kids were in bed that night, I started my “fight of faith.” I had already been meditating on Mark 11:23 that says I can have what I say, so I applied that verse to this situation.  I read the scripture out loud many times, sometimes focusing on key phrases, and then I started saying: “I declare that when *Brian wakes up in the morning, he will be totally healed with no evidence of sickness about him and because I do not doubt in my heart but I believe that those things that I say come to pass, I have whatever I say.”

I envisioned him getting up in the morning, totally healed, asking for something to eat like he normally did in the morning.  It got to the place where I was so expectant that this would happen that I would have been surprised if he would not have been healed in the morning.

During the night, my son had a high fever.  I ignored my fears and kept thanking God that when Brian woke up in the morning he’d be totally healed. When my son woke up in the morning, he showed no evidence of being sick.  He got up with a big smile on his face and asked for something to eat like he normally did and then he played all day.   That evening he had a temperature but by the next day he was totally healed.

Note: I am not saying that I do not believe in taking my children to a doctor, please use wisdom and take your child to get medical treatment if the situation calls for it.

Another example of how meditation in the Word brought results:

My husband had a new job and he wanted to work some extra hours.  He asked his supervisors about it and they said that because he was new and because of where he worked in the company, he would not be working overtime any time soon.  I meditated on Psalms 21:2 (Thou hast given him his heart’s desire and hast not withholden the request of his lips) and on some other scriptures.  In a few days he came home and said that he was now allowed to work 2 extra hours a day plus he could work an extra day every week by going in on Saturday.

Another incident: Several years ago we had a leaky pipe under our living room floor.  I started meditating on 2 Corinthians  2:14.  Over and over again, I said, “God always causes us to triumph and he will cause us to triumph in this situation as well.”  Two days later the pipe was fixed and the cost was minimal.

The results from meditating in the Word aren’t always this dramatic and quick-but Biblical meditation  always works.  If you have a situation you want turned around, find the scriptures that apply and meditate on them at least twice a day until you get your answer.

How to Meditate: Change Your Life By Muttering to Yourself

Many Christians are plagued with the problem of repeatedly committing the same kind of sin. Many have prayed so many times and fasted so many times, all to no avail. Although prayer and fasting strengthen a Christian, they alone are not the only ingredient needed in maintaining a righteous life or overcoming temptation. It should be noted that the devil tested Jesus after He had fasted for forty days and forty nights. What weapon did Jesus use in overcoming the devil? It was the Word of God. Psalm 119: 11 states that “thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee”. (KJV)

Rom. 12:2 states “and be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”. The secret to stopping sinning is the maintenance of a renewed mind. This renewal comes from the Word of God. Have you ever noticed how poised you get not to sin against God again after studying or hearing the Word of God? But then somehow you later find that this zeal dies down and the old sin repeats itself. This point is clearly illustrated by the “parable of the sower” in which Jesus described various scenarios of what happened after people had heard the Word of God. You may pray and fast, but if your mind is not properly fortified, the devil will be able to convince you easily to commit the same sin repeatedly.

So one may ask, how do we maintain this renewed mind which is so poised not to sin against God and resolute to live righteously? In Joshua 1:8 it is stated, “this book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success”. (KJV) By constantly meditating or thinking about God’s Word and what it implies in our lives, especially verses about sin and it’s effects, we will be able to maintain a renewed mind.

Most Christians commit the same sin repeatedly because the devil is able to tempt them while they are unprepared or unalert for that temptation. The strategy is to find Biblical verses which deal with the sin being committed repeatedly and memorize them. You then meditate on them from time to time (at least thrice daily). During those meditations, imagine yourself being presented with that sin and then refute it with the Word of God you have memorized. This practice, if maintained continually would build in one the habit of meditating on God’s Word and open him or her up to understand how God’s Word really applies to him or her. Prayer and fasting too are very important as they strengthen one spiritually and enable one to pay attention to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, especially concerning the sin at hand.

For example, you might say, “The power of God is working in me to…. give me wisdom concerning every situation in my life, strengthen me, cause me to be an overcomer, help me be a blessing to other people etc.”

As a child of God, you have tremendous power available to you, but it must be activated. Start saying it and believing it and allow this power to work in you.

According to  Joshua 1:8, meditation will help you to obey the Word of  God, and cause you to prosper and have good success. Some of the meanings for the Hebrew word for meditate in this passage of scripture are to mutter, murmur, imagine, talk, or utter.  You can meditate the Word by muttering it, speaking it or imagining it.

To get started, choose a portion of scripture that you want to become more familiar with and start saying it to yourself over and over again.  Do this for 10-15 minutes at first, and eventually increase the time.

As you meditate,  you may start getting images in your mind of how your life will change when this verse starts happening in your life. It’s okay, go ahead and imagine what it will be like, how you will feel, how this will impact your family and so forth.

Stay sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and keep a journal with you, because as you meditate and go about your day, God may speak to you about things you will need to do before the scriptures can fully manifest in your life.

For example, I was meditating on Proverbs 2:6 that I would have wisdom, knowledge and understanding on how to start an internet business.  A few weeks later, I received an e-mail offering a internet marketing course at a ridiculously low price.  I bought the course and learned many of the basics of online marketing.

If you establish the habit of meditating in the Word of God, you will start to tap into the powerful resources that are available to every born again child of God.  Get started today and expect good success in every area of your life.

First you will observe and do whatever you meditate on. What you meditate on gets inside of you and becomes real to you. It changes your thoughts to believe that you can have what Bible says is yours. This in turn will cause your actions to change.

Secondly, you will make your way prosperous. From looking up the word “way” in the Strong’s
concordance, I get the impression that it’s talking about habits- the way you talk and act. You establish habits that ensure your success.

Thirdly, you will have good success. To me, good success is victory in every area of life- spiritually, financially, physically, mentally etc. A person might have limited success apart from God but it won’t be total success. In other words, they might have a lot of money but no peace or they might have a good marriage but no money. God wants you to be successful in every area of life.

Meditating will cause you to have more peace in your life.  When you meditate on scriptures that promise you the answer to your need, in your mind, it is already taken care of.

If you have not established the habit of meditating yet, start with Joshua 1: 8. Contemplate on it and say it over and over to yourself until you become fully persuaded that meditating in the Word is the most sensible thing you can do.

When you let yourself become offended, you are no longer walking in love and your faith becomes ineffective. In the scriptures we find that faith works by love and without faith it is impossible to please God.

Everyone has opportunities to be offended. Because we all have all perceive life differently, an incident that will irk one person will not necessarily bother someone else.

What do you do when someone has done something that hurts you or makes you angry?

1. Take the situation to God. Acknowledge that you are upset by what they did. Ask God to help you walk in love and see the situation through His eyes.

2. Think about what is upsetting you and write down what you learned. Let’s say for example that you made an investment based on the confident advice of a well meaning friend and because of it, you lost thousands of dollars. In your journal you might write, “I learned that before I make an investment, I need to pray and seek God and do my own research.”

3. Forgive the person(s) who slighted you. Pray for them and ask God to bless them and give them wisdom concerning every area of their life. Do this every time you are tempted to think bad thoughts about them.

4. Refuse to allow negative thoughts to stay in your mind. After praying for the person, focus your attention on something else. One thing that works well is to speak positive things out of your mouth. You can’t have negative thoughts while you’re speaking positive things.

5. Unless you are in counseling, do not rehearse the problem to other people. This only makes it worse. Every time you talk about it, the memory of what happened will resurface and you will have to start the healing process all over again.

Giving in to offense causes you to make unwise decisions. The pastor says something you do not like so you leave the church, your mother made you mad so you don’t talk to her for 6 months, your spouse made a thoughtless remark about your weight so you eat a whole box of chocolates, you were abused by a relative and you use it as an excuse to stay terminally depressed.

Not giving in to offense does not mean you do not feel hurt. It simply means you will not allow yourself to dwell on the hurt and let it keep you from living a happy, fulfilled life. Determine today that you will walk in love and not allow strife to steal your destiny.

In a previous article, Overcoming Negative Thoughts, I talked about how even if you are sure you heard from God about an undertaking, you most likely will face doubts about your decision.

Your feelings aren’t facts. You will need to learn to ignore them. Even though you have meditated in the Word and spent time in prayer- those negative thoughts may still persist. Here are some practical ways to overcome the negative thoughts that bombard your mind.

Find scriptures that promise you success concerning your future. Speak them over and over. When you talk, your thoughts have to be quiet to see what your mouth is saying.

Go to bed and get some sleep. When you are tired-it is much easier to give in to negativity.

Beautify your home. If your surroundings are clean, organized and pleasing to your senses, you will gain a sense of control and will be less likely to feel overwhelmed by negative thoughts.

Change the channel. When you are being hit with negative thoughts- force your attention on something else. Watch a funny movie, listen to upbeat music that makes you feel happy, read a highly entertaining book, or watch your children make mud pies.

Think about past victories. Meditate on the good things God has already done for you and thank Him out loud.

The biggest obstacle to your success is in your own mind. If you learn to ignore your negative thoughts and follow your dreams, you will achieve great things for the kingdom of God.

1. Walk in love. Faith works by love and without it, your faith won’t work. Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-8 to see what love is.

2. Find the scriptures that pertain to your situation by using a concordance  or a scripture promise book. One of my favorite books to find scripture is  Scripture Keys for Kingdom Living by June Davis.  Write the scriptures you find on a 3 x 5 card.

3. Fix your attention on the scripture verses you have collected. Keep them with you and read them out loud again and again. Meditate on them and visualize the results you want.

4. Pray the Word-not the problem. When you go before God, spend your time reminding Him what His word says, do not use it as an opportunity to rehearse your problems. Thank Him that you have what His word says you have.

5. Speak what you want. In Mark 11:23, Jesus said: Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Refuse to spend your time talking about the problem, instead speak the desired end result. Instead of saying “My leg hurts so bad” say “Thank God I am free from pain.” It may seem foolish but if you want victory-it is important to follow God’s method.

6. Praise God continually. Praise Him that Jesus bore your sicknesses and paid the price so you can walk in divine health. Praise Him because He always causes you to triumph. Praise Him out loud day and night.

7. Don’t give up. Your enemy, the devil wants to keep you in bondage. He will send people in your life to tell you it is not God’s will to heal you. He may tell you that because you have sinned-God will not heal you. (If you have sinned, ask God for forgiveness and tell the devil to get out). If you want victory, you must be persistent.

Jesus has paid the price for you to be free in every area of life-that includes freedom from illness. Take advantage of this free gift by choosing to walk in divine health. Whether you go to a Doctor or not, make the Word of God the most important part of your life and grab hold of your victory today.
