5 Steps to Help You Control Your Temper

December 3rd, 2009 by Lorene Troyer
If you frequently lose your temper and don’t know what to do about it, I’ve got some good news. You can learn how to control your temper. I dealt with this issue myself when my children were small. I had been married for 10 years without children and suddenly I found myself having to make some major adjustments. It was a struggle for me to quit yelling at my children when they made a mess or did something that did not line up with my plan for that day.

Here are 5 steps you can take to help you regain control.

1. Make sure to spend quality time with God in the morning. Get in the Word, and ask Him to help you walk in love towards those who are around you.

2. Keep an eye on your diet. Minimize the amount of white flour and sugar you eat, and any other foods that leave you feeling under par. It is a lot easier to control your temper when you feel good.

3. Watch your caffeine intake. If you are a coffee drinker, consider switching to caffeinated tea. Tea will give you a boost of energy without the jittery side effects or the letdown often experienced by coffee drinkers.

4. Laugh on purpose every day. Laughter is a great tension reliever. Find a show that makes you laugh and watch it regularly or read a funny book or find funny video clips to watch on the internet.

5. Speak the Word. Memorize a portion of scripture that you can repeat to yourself over and over again especially when you are in a tense situation. The thing I repeat to myself is from *1 Corinthians 13:4 & 5 -”I am patient and kind and I am not easily angered.”
