Writing in a Journal: 7 Reasons to Keep a Journal

August 13th, 2008 by Lorene Troyer

Writing in a journal is a powerful way to help you accomplish your objectives.  It will help you achieve success regardless of your calling in life.  Why is writing in a journal such a great idea and what will it do for you?  Here are 7 reasons you will want to keep a journal:

1.  It helps you clarify and solve problems.  Let’s say for example, that some nights when you get home from work you feel extremely tired.  By journaling, you discover that the fatigue almost always occurs on days when you have to travel out of town.  You know that on those days you usually skip lunch.  Due to your diligent journaling, you make the discovery that by eating on a regular schedule you are able to keep your blood sugar evened out and prevent the extreme tiredness.

2.  Journaling is a way to keep your ideas and dreams alive until you can put them in motion.  You may wake up in the middle of the night with a brilliant idea on how to earn extra money from home. Thankfully you have your journal on the nightstand so you can write down your money making idea. Many great ideas are lost in the mists of time because they were not written down.

3.  It is a great way to help you discover your God-given destiny.  What desires do you have on the inside of you?  What talents do you have?  What are your goals?  What does your dream life look like? Write these things down and read through them regularly.  You will see certain patterns emerge and it will give you insight into your calling.

4.  By writing and consistently reading your journals, you keep solutions to problems in front of you.  A few years ago I had been having a lot of headaches and I found out that if I took 400 mg. of magnesium every day, I no longer had issues with headaches.  But, for some reason I quit taking the magnesium and in the past 3 months I was having headaches again.  I read through my journals and saw how I solved that problem in the past and now since taking the magnesium again, the headaches have disappeared.

5.  It helps you remember important information.  As you read books and listen to CD’s you will learn things that can help you succeed in your role as a wife, mother, entrepreneur etc. but the fact is that we only hold on to about 20% of what we read.  Writing it down and reading it regularly will insure that you can retain and use this beneficial information.

6.  It helps you organize your thoughts and clear your mind.  For example you may have an idea of how you want to decorate your house in a green and yellow leaf theme and because you don’t want to forget your great idea, you keep mulling it over in your head.  If you write your ideas in a journal, then you can come back to them later. This will free your mind to focus on other things.

7.  Journal writing helps you assemble your thoughts and express yourself when an opportunity presents itself. If you have written about a particular subject in your journal, it will be a lot easier to comment about it. Whether you are writing a letter to your sister or participating in a church Bible study, you will be able to communicate intelligently about the subject that’s being discussed.

Journal writing is a great tool to help you succeed in pursuing your destiny but it will only work if you are committed to writing and reading through them regularly.   Buy a writing journal and get started today.
